Nevada’s Transportation Agencies Highlight EDC Transportation Surcharges and Warn Against Illegal Passenger Transportation
As thousands of attendees travel to and from the 2026 Electric Daisy Carnival this weekend, the Nevada Taxicab Authority and the Nevada Transportation Authority are alerting the public about temporary transportation surcharges, expected increases in demand, and the importance of using only properly licensed passenger transportation services.
To help ensure adequate taxi service to meet a significant demand for transportation services during EDC, the Nevada Taxicab Authority Boards has approved temporary taxicab surcharges authorized for trips involving the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The surcharge fees will be applied during the following periods:
- May 15, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. through May 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
- May 16, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. through May 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
- May 17, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. through May 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
During these periods:
- A $40 surcharge will apply to every taxicab trip ending at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
- A $60 surcharge will apply to every taxicab trip beginning at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
In addition to taxicab surcharges, rideshare passengers may also experience surge pricing because of increased demand throughout the weekend.
State transportation officials are warning that these higher fares can create an incentive for individuals to illegally solicit cash rides or operate unauthorized transportation services outside of licensed platforms and regulatory oversight.
“Public safety is the top priority,” said Taxicab Authority Administrator Todd Park. “Passengers should only use properly licensed transportation providers. Unpermitted and off-app drivers may not carry the required commercial insurance, may not have completed required safety inspections, and may not have undergone required background checks.”
Drivers operating off-app or off-meter also face serious consequences including fines of up to $10,000, mandatory vehicle impoundment, and potential criminal or civil liabilities.
The Nevada Taxicab Authority and Nevada Transportation Authority are jointly launching a public awareness campaign to educate both drivers and passengers that providing paid passenger transportation in Nevada without the proper permits, licenses, or through unauthorized arrangements is illegal. The campaign includes educational materials posted on agency websites, social media outreach, and engagement through community forums.
